Modern dance evolved from classically trained
dancers and choreographers who revolted against the principles
and ideals of ballet (Isadora Duncan, Martha Graham & Merce
Cunningham to name a few). Therefore modern dance includes
some classical techniques as well as their opposite eg flexed
feet, contracted and curved spine, and the use of everday
gesture. It is a very expressive, emotional and lyrical style.
Contemporary dance focuses more on the communication
of ideas, thoughts and the function of the body rather than
emotion. Dance works are built through the use of an intent,
which builds into a motif, phrase; and then movements are
shaped into a choreographed work using a variety of forms.
